About USU
ENRICHING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
The University of Sydney Union (USU) the oldest and largest student organisation in Australia, was founded as a university debating society in 1874.
The University of Sydney Union Debating Team is Australia’s most successful debating society and currently ranked 1st in the world, ahead of Oxford, Cambridge and all Ivy League Universities.
From this beginning the USU has grown in strength and scope to promote leadership and intellectual challenge outside the classroom. The USU aims to foster the aspirations of the campus community by providing cultural, social and entertainment programs and student clubs and societies.
More than 200 registered clubs and societies are funded and supported by the USU. Despite the impact of VSU we have maintained this area of vital leadership and social development.
Our members have paid for and maintain three buildings – Manning House, Wentworth Building and Holme. USU also provides spaces in a number of affiliated and medical sites.
The USU also funds the oldest continuing theatre group in Australia: the Sydney University Dramatic Society (SUDS). SUDS produces world-class theatre professionals and was the only Australian group to be invited to the New York Fringe Festival in 2006. .
In 2007 the annual University Union Revue season saw record seven faculties produce revues in the Seymour Centre. With the support of USU students from revues and several faculties have participated in both the Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals
The USU Debating Team frequently holds both the National and Australian titles and the Vice Chancellor’s Cup the trophy for the annual debate between university faculty and students.
Other public speaking awards include the Justice Michael Kirby Plain speaking award.
The USU offers scholarships, grants and prizes in literature, debating, photography, film, drama, philanthropic works and art. The art collection is exhibited throughout the USU buildings and dedicated art spaces.
Many free concerts featuring ARIA award-winning performers are provided by USU, and each year more than 50 bands take part in USU Band Comp which has been a launch pad for The Whitlams, Frenzal Rhomb, Josh Pyke and The Vines.
The USU is passionate about creating a dynamic community that supports its members, encourages initiative and awards talent and leadership.
The USU leadership and volunteer program includes the School Tutoring Program for disadvantaged local school students and Student Points of Contact (SPOC) during Orientation Week. The USU Australian Discussion Groups help international students cope with the difficulties associated with living and studying abroad.
Members of USU can enjoy membership benefits and discounts at on-campus and off-campus food and retail outlets via the Access Benefits program.
The USU is committed to working in partnership with the University to achieve our vision of enriching the student experience. For over 130 years USU has enriched campus life and fostered the cultural, social and intellectual well being of its members. We look forward to the next 130 and beyond.
