It’s not often you get the opportunity to be part of a festival with a budget of a quarter of a million dollars! The experience gained in dealing with everything from bumping hundreds of stalls onto the hallowed lawns of the University, dealing with security, choosing menus and negotiating with bands to make this a unique and memorable festival. Few people get the chance to leave Uni with this kind of experience under their belt.

Having started life as a debates society,University of Sydney Union acknowledges the Debates is an important part of the. It is also significant to The University in terms of reputation and student recruitment. Although the USU has grown to encompass student space, catering and culture, debating remains one of our core activities being both historically significant and a vibrant aspect of USU life today. The Director of Debates (DOD) will supervise and organise the day-to-day running of the Debates Committee.

The USU is governed by a Board of Student Directors elected by members of the USU. If you want to make a real difference to the way that USU is governed, you can run for a position on our Board of Directors.
Nominations open on the first day of O-Week (Wednesday 25 February, 2009) and close at the end of March each year. Elections are held in May every year.
If you have an interest in the field of writing, journalism and/or communications, these roles provide training and mentoring which ensures you gain skills that are both practical and enjoyable.
You will assist USU to produce professional-quality publications, meet regular deadlines and work with experienced staff.
The Bull - USU's full-colour weekly magazine. Gives a weekly snapshot of what is happening on campus along with giveaways, student articles, Clubs and Societies event details, committee meetings, access card specials and more.
UR - This USU publication is released annually and is your University Year Book. Available at the end of Semester 2, it highlights events and activities that occurred throughout the year.

You can have a say in USU activities, programmes and events by being involved with one of our Student Experience Committees.
Committees act as links between the Board and USU Members to identify, condense and analyse information before presenting recommendations to the Board, and provide valuable input that helps the Board reach its decisions.
CLUBS & SOCIETIES COMMITTEE
The Clubs & Societies Committee reviews applications from Clubs and Societies registered with the USU for financial assistance for their various activities, and makes recommendations to the Board regarding the funding and registration of Clubs. The Committee also makes recommendations to the Board regarding the involvement of Clubs and Societies in Orientation Week, Re-Orientation Day and Clubs & Societies conferences, and reviews the Clubs and Societies Regulations.
DEBATES COMMITTEE
The Debates Committee organises the USU’s Debates programme, including the coordination of internal debating competitions, social functions for debaters and the publication of the Debates Handbook. The Committee also supervises the USU’s involvement in the Australasian and World University championships, as well as other Intervarsity tournaments, including the selection of debaters and adjudicators. The Committee aims to trains and involve USU Members in debating, public speaking seminars and adjudicating events.
STUDENT PROGRAMMES & ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE
The Student Programmes & Activities Committee plans and promotes regular activities and events, including arts and cultural affairs programmes and community services and volunteering programmes for USU Members, and advises the Board on the USU’s Orientation Week programme, the USU’s Arts Festival and Commemoration Day.
The Committee also advises the Board on all aspects of student media including The Union Recorder, The Bull and Hermes, the utilisation of performance spaces owned by the USU, the maintenance, storage and display of the artworks belonging to the USU and the policy and guidelines for the Cash4Art Programme. The Committee considers the provision of Member and Community Development Programmes and the USU’s community services and volunteering programmes, advises the Board on the development of new volunteering programmes for USU Members and oversees the Student Point of Contact programme (SPOC).

ACTIVITIES CONVENOR
The University of Sydney prides itself on the vibrancy of the University of Sydney Experience. The USU is key to this important aspect of the University’s brand. The Activities Convenorships are an initiative to further delve into the reaches of the student networks as we endeavour continuously to ensure our entertainment schedule is relevant to today’s students.
Up to 5 Activities Convenors will be appointed.
MULTICULTURAL CONVENOR
The University Community is made up of people from many different nationalities. Some are Australian Born, others are born overseas. Some live here permanently, others are here for the duration of their degrees (Over 20% of the student population are international students).
INDIGENOUS CONVENOR
The USU has been active in and supportive of the process of indigenous recognition at this University. The USU is a foundation partner in the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience and has partnered for many years with the local indigenous community on such events as Indigenous Carnivale.
QUEER CONVENOR
The USU’s Queer program aims to bring to the University Community an awareness of queer issues whilst at the same time providing a safe and accepting environment in which all students feel comfortable and welcome. The Queer Convenors will broaden the reach of the queer program on campus by developing existing activities and initiating others.
The USU will appoint two (2) people to this role: 1 male-identifying Queer Convenor and 1 female-identifying Queer Convenor.
ENVIRONMENT CONVENOR
The USU takes environmental considerations very seriously. Manning House is a showcase of environmentally sound building with hydraulic sub floor heating, solar powered hot water, gas cooking, natural ventilation and automatic and motion sensitive light switches. The Environment Convenor works closely with staff to promote an awareness of ecologically sound practices and environmental awareness amongst the University Community..
PUBLIC ISSUES CONVENOR
The University of Sydney Union has long been at the forefront of the dissemination of information to the student community. Furthermore the USU has been instrumental in taking the concerns of the student community to the wider community. The public issues convenors’ role is to facilitate this ebb and flow of information through such events as public debates, discussion panels, visiting guest speakers and so on.
POSTGRADUATE CONVENOR
The University of Sydney Union recognises the valuable contribution made by members of the Post Graduate community to the ethos of the University. Furthermore the USU appreciates that more can be done to improve the University experience of this important cohort. To this end the role of the Post Graduate Convenor has been developed on order that the relation between the USU and the post graduates of all varieties might be explored and improved.
WOMEN'S CONVENOR
Women make up over 50% of the student population. It is only relatively recently (1972) that the Men’s Union and the Women’s Union amalgamated. The Women’s Convenor position evolved from previous women’s programs at the Union and has as its aim the promotion of the rights of women, women’s safety, the abolition of harassment and ensuring that this university continues as a safe place for women.
