What is the benefit of being an Access Card Holder with the USU?
As an Access Card Holder, you are entitled to a wide range of benefits. You receive a minimum of 15% discount at catering and commercial outlets, discounts on movie money and tickets to concerts, plays and musicals. Is it cheaper for me to purchase movie money from the USU?
Almost always the answer is yes! The USU sells movie money at reduced costs. Cinemas offered include Dendy, Greater Union, Hoyts, IMAX, Palace and Reading. We also have Discount Tickets to Sydney Aquarium.
How do I start a club or society?
You can see a list of current societies in the C & S Directory. If you can't find one to satisfy your tastes it's easy to create your own. Have a read through the information packs under Starting a New Club and drop in and speak to the C & S Staff opposite The ACCESS Centre in Manning House.
How do I find out where certain venues are on campus?
Students can find campus maps and venue information at The ACCESS Centre on Level 1 of Manning House. For a detailed map of the University campus and the adjoining streets, have a peek at http://www.facilities.usyd.edu.au/maps/guide.shtml, or to locate a specific University building, go to http://db.auth.usyd.edu.au/directories/map/index.stm. Does the USU offer legal support for students?
No. The USU is a service provider that caters to students’ cultural and social development needs as well as catering and venue booking provisions. Legal support is provided by the Students’ Representative Council who are located on the Basement Level of the USU’s Wentworth Building.
How many clubs and societies are there?
The USU administers over 200 clubs and societies. These include social clubs, musical societies, dance groups, coops, political clubs, religious groups and humanitarian groups. See the C & S Directory.
Does the USU have an accommodation service?
No. The USU is a service provider that caters to students’ cultural, social development and catering needs. Accommodation services are provided through the University’s Accommodation Office located on Level 7, Education Building (next door to the USU’s Manning House).
I have a problem with my exam results. Can the USU help me in making an appeal?
No. The USU is a service provider that caters to students’ cultural, social development and catering needs. Students should contact the Students’ Representative Council, Basement Level Wentworth Building for help with this type of query.
Can the USU help me with my Austudy application?
No. Students can get help for any Austudy queries through the Students’ Representative Council, Basement Level Wentworth Building.
Is it cheaper for me to buy discounted tickets from the USU?
Yes. The USU negotiates with promoters throughout the year and then offers at least a 15% discount via the Access Card.
Can I organise one of the USU’s special events, like O-Week?
Yes. The USU recruits students for a number of Student Positions & Employment throughout the year. These include O-Week, Verge Arts Festival and Debating Program Directors, Student Editors, Queer Convenors, Public Issues Convenors, Indigenous Convenors, Women’s Convenors, Multicultural Convenors, Postgraduate Convenors, Re-O Convenors and Revues Convenors. Does the USU have any publications?
Yes. The USU has had many publications over the years. Currently we have The Bull (a free weekly magazine, in full colour, available during semester), Hermes & the annual Union Recorder. For information on advertising in these publications, visit Advertising.
How do I find out about USU events on campus?
The easiest way to find out what is happening on campus is to pick up a copy of The Bull , a weekly publication which details events and happenings on campus. You can also find out what’s happening from the USU’s website at What's On and from Publication stands in Holme, Manning and Wentworth. The USU also publicises events through posters and handouts across campus and an e-Bull conveniently placed in your inbox!
Can I hire out Manning Bar?
Yes. As long as the Bar is not already booked students can enquire about holding an event at this venue. Contact Dave Batty from the Entertainment Office (Ground Floor, Manning House on dave@custommade.com.au .
How do I book a space for an event put on by my club?
You can book a space for your club through the Room Bookings form.
Does the USU hire out equipment?
Yes. The USU has equipment hire available for all. Equipment includes BBQ’s, PA’s, board games, projectors, staple guns, DJ equipment and a badge making machine. Equipment can be hired from The ACCESS Centre on Level 1 of Manning House. For more information see the Equipment Hire section.
Does the USU have a casual employment office?
No. The USU advertises its Student Positions & Employment and general Employment opportunities online. The University runs a casual employment office located on Level 7, Education Building.
