Cash for Art Grants 2008

The University of Sydney Union supports students with the opportunity to illustrate their creative talents through the Cash4Art program. The scheme provides funding to students wanting to show their artistic abilities.

The aim of the program is to support student projects and display the creative University community.

University of Sydney Union students* can use the funding for a wide range of cultural and artistic activities, from the production of films and plays, to concerts and magazines, and art, photo and multimedia exhibitions.

In 2008 the fund stands at $20,000; groups and clubs can receive up to $1,500 and individuals up to $1,000.

Throughout 2008 there were three rounds for the Cash 4 Art grants program. Each application will be judged by a committee of professional artists, staff and USU Board directors.

* Must be a current student at The University of Sydney and a USU member holding an Access Card.

Round 3 Successful Applicants

The USU congratulates the following students with their succesful applications for Round 3 of the Cash for Art Creative Grants Program!

Clubs and Societies

Vetsoc (The University of Sydney Veterinary Society) will use $915 to enlarge four photos capturing amazing moments of a range of animals in the wild taken by members of the Veterinary Science Faculty. These 1220 x 920mm canvas prints will be displayed in Ralph’s café at the Veterinary Sciences Faculty where they will be viewed by students and staff and brighten the overall environment of the faculty.

Groups

So What? a new theatre co-operative will use $1292 to restage the SUDS (Sydney University Dramatic Society) production of The Laramie Project, commemorating the death of Matthew Shepard in November 1998. The April production of The Laramie Project received several awards, including Best Major Event at the Annual Clubs and Societies Awards Night. One of the sixteen planned performances will coincide with the tenth anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death, and has received support from The Matthew Shepard Foundation. The Laramie Project will show between the 1st and the 22nd of November, 2008 at the Newtown Theatre.

Tumbleweed Productions will use $1292 to launch their own production of Doll Cabaret. After the success of Objectify This! during the 2007 Sydney University Revues season, and later Princess Cabaret at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, both actors and producers came together to create Doll Cabaret. Similar to past performances, Doll Cabaret will not only entertain, but highlight the high quality work women contribute to comedy, a traditionally male-dominated arena. Doll Cabaret will premier for one night as part of the University of Sydney Union’s O-Week and will run at the Roxbury Hotel in Glebe during late March 2009 before going on tour to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Individuals

Tom McKeith will use $1000 to fund part of a 2009 Tropfest entry Sweet Kicks, a story of love, loss, nightclub exclusion and the importance of good shoes. Sweet kicks will be brought to main campus early first semester, where it will be screened at the Indie Filmmaker’s Night in Hermann’s Bar, with a range of other short films. This will not only be an opportunity to showcase the talents of Sydney University Filmmakers, but also encourage other students in the area.

Chris Rollit will use $1000 to complete an artwork highlighting the value and potential use of materials often disposed of after a single use. Working Wood will use polyurethane and photographic emulsion to print landscape and texture shots of buildings onto the sides of a shipping crate thrown out by Sydney University. Working Wood will be unveiled at Hermann’s Bar in early Semester 1, 2009 and will be exhibited in other USU spaces for the rest of the semester.
