Public Issues
The University of Sydney Union has long been at the forefront of the dissemination of information to the student community. Furthermore the USU has been instrumental in taking the concerns of the student community to the wider community. The public issues convenors’ role is to facilitate this ebb and flow of information through such events as public debates, discussion panels, visiting guest speakers and so on.
Specific Responsibilities
- In consultation with staff, members of the SPAC Committee, Clubs & Societies and other relevant groups, develop a broad, interesting and relevant program of public discussions, lectures and panels
- To acknowledge and work on programs to highlight specific days of national or international importance.
- To promote the events to both the broader USU membership and specific interest groups

Tristan Rendall - Public Issues Convenor 2008
Tristan has recently completed a combined BA/BCommerce degree, and is currently writing his Honours thesis on the development of energy security and its impact upon China's oil interests in Sudan. He has a long history of working for the USU, having been a volunteer and O-Week Convenor during his undergraduate degree. As Public Issues Convenor, Tristan intends on bringing politics into the public arena, most notably through the highly successful Politics In The Pub series at Hermann's Bar and through improving connections with clubs, societies and other groups on campus. Outside of his job at USU, Tristan has worked for AusAID and The Sydney Globalist, and can often be found dancing to bad 90s pop music, no matter what the time of day.
